The Hummingbird would like to sip from the fuchsia, which is 2 meters \sqrt{2}\,\text{meters} away, however the cat is in the way. If the hummingbird flew perpendicularly from the cat and flower for 1 meter 1\,\text{meter} , how far then would the hummingbird have to fly to reach the flower if it flew straight?

Using Pythagorean's Theorem we find that 2 2 + 1 2 = 3 2 \sqrt{2}^2+1^2=\sqrt{3}^2 .

To solve for the hypotenuse we must take the square root of each side which results in 2 2 + 1 2 = 3 \sqrt{\sqrt{2}^2+1^2}=\sqrt{3}
