Hickory Dickory Clocks

Algebra Level 3

At 12 o' Clock, I reset two of my analog clocks to the correct time. One of the clocks gains 1 minute per hour. The other clock loses 2 minutes per hour. After exactly how many minutes will the two clocks next show the same time as each other?

The answer is 14400.

After 240 hours both the clocks will show 4:00. 240 minutes fast will be 4:00 and 480 minutes slow will be 4:00. 240 hours = 14400 minutes

It helps to explain your calculations: Every one hour, the difference between the two clocks increases by 3 minutes, so we need to see how many hours, later converted into minutes, will pass until it accumulates into a difference of 12 hours. We see this happens after 12 60 3 = 240 \frac{12*60}{3}=240 minutes, and from thereon we proceed with your solution.
