Honor Roll

There are 300 students in a middle school. Every 19 in 50 students qualifies for honor roll. However, the school can give honor roll to only 75 students. There will be a lottery to choose the 75 students. What is the probability that you will be in and lose the lottery? (Don't include the percent sign)

The answer is 13.

I think the problem should be stated more clearly. I first interpreted that the probability would not take into account the 19/50 part.

To start off, you must first see how many students qualify for honor roll in total. 19/50 qualify, so in total 114/300 qualify. That is 38% of the students. Then, if you subtract 75/300 (the amount that will win the lottery) from 114/300 (the total number of students in the lottery), you will end up with 39/300. That converts to 13/100 and is 13%. So 13% is the percentage of students that will get in the lottery, but fail to get honor roll.

Ha. Got it.
