You can solve it by making a simultaneous equation. Humans only have 1 head and horses also only have 1 head, so x + y = 74 (x =number of human heads and y =number of horseheads). Humans have 2 legs and horses have 4 legs, so 2x + 4y = 196 (x = number of human legs and y = number of horse legs).

x + y = 74

2x + 4y = 196

x = 50 and y = 24
