How close?

Calculus Level 3

Two ships A and B are 4 km apart. A is due west of B. If A moves with a uniform velocity of 8 km/hr due east and B moves with a uniform velocity of 6 km/hr due south, calculate the closest distance (in kms) apart of A and B.

The answer is 2.4.

This is a very long solution. If u use the concept of relative velocity, we can get the solution in a minute without calculus!!

This is basically a mechanics problem. Find velocity of A wrt B . After this draw the path of motion of A as seen by B. The minimum distance between the two is the perpendicular distance of path of A (as seen by B) from initial position of B

yup did the same!
