How large can you make it (3)? (Inspired by Satyen Nabar and Nihar Mahajan)

Logic Level 2

Shift exactly 2 matchsticks to another position so as to convert the number 8005 into the largest four digit positive integer.

Details and Assumptions:

  • Form a regular number by moving just 2 matchsticks.
  • Use of exponents / mathematical signs / tricks is not allowed.
  • Rotating / turning the figure is not allowed.
  • All digits look like this: (for clarifying the shape of digits)

Move the left bottom matchstick of the first 8 8 to the middle of second 0 0 to get 8 8 .Then move the left bottom matchstick of the first zero to its middle to get 9 9 .Thus the required number is 9985 9985 .

Bonus Question: Applying the same rules, can you find the smallest four digit positive integer instead?

Nihar:- Here :P + 0 ! +0! from me xD

  • Step 1: 9805 \huge9805 By bringing the stick in 8 8 to 0 0 .

  • Step 2: 9985 \huge9985 By bringing the stick in 8 8 to 0 0 .

Moderator note:

As always, the tricky part is in justifying that you have indeed obtained the largest possible.

That aspect is often more important than just finding out what you think the answer should be.

Really Easy!
