In 2013, scientists created a quantum gas whose temperature fell below absolute zero:

Ironically, when an object has a temperature below absolute zero, it is "hotter" than any object with a positive temperature, in the sense that heat always transfers from the negative temperature to the positive one, and the object becomes even hotter as the temperature approaches absolute zero from the negative side.
