Let the number collected by the boy be y , then 2 y + y = 1 0 8 . If the situation were that they collected equal number of cherries, they would both pick 2 1 1 0 8 = 5 4 cherries. But because the girl has collected twice as much, we have three parts now, where 3 2 of the collected cherries were the girl's ⟹ the boy had 3 1 1 0 8 = 3 6 cherries. We obtain 3 6 × 2 = 7 2 cherries collected by the girl.
