How many children?

Algebra Level 3

A father in his will left all his money to his children in the following manner:

$1000 to the first born and 1/10 of what then remains, then $2000 to the second born and 1/10 of what then remains, then $3000 to the third born and 1/10 of what then remains, and so on.

When this was done each child had the same amount. How many children were there?

Let total amount = $X, and number of children =n. Since the amount with all the children are equal, each one will get $X/n. Now the first child gets 1000 + ( X - 1000 )/10 = X/n. for the second child, 2000 + ( X - X/n - 2000)/10 = X/n. solving for X/n we get $9000. substituting X/n in first equation, we get X = $81000 which gives n = 9 .
