Total number of dots in 6 × 6 6 \times 6 cube = ∑ n = 1 6 n = 6 × 7 2 = 21 \displaystyle \sum_{n = 1} ^ 6 n = \dfrac{6 \times 7}{2} = 21

Total number of dots visible = 17 17

Remaining number of dots = 21 − 17 = 4 21 - 17 = 4

∴ The number 4 is resting on the table. \therefore \text{The number 4 is resting on the table.}

The 1-6 number cube says,"Why would I have 9,16,24 on my faces?"

Real solution:(1+2+3+4+5+6)-17=4

The side resting on the table is the one with 4 dots. 21 total dots - 17 visible dots = 4 hidden dots.
