How many hours did they work?

Algebra Level 1

Nigel and Shawn are both electricians. Nigel charges $15 for a service call, plus $15 per hour. Shawn charges $35 for a service call, plus $10 per hour. If they work the same number of hours and are paid the same amount of money, how many hours did they work?

let the working hour is x then according to the statement 15 + 15/x= 35 + 10/x taking LCM 15x+15/x = 35x+10/x by cross multiplication 35xsquare+10x=15xsquare+15x simplifying further we get x=1/4 ......

Let x x be the number of hours they've worked.

15 + 15 x = 35 + 10 x 5 x = 20 x = 4 15+15x=35+10x \rightarrow 5x=20 \rightarrow x=4

Therefore, they both worked for 4 hours .

Suppose they work for X hrs. For Nogel dollar earned are 15 + 15 X anf for Shawn it is 35 + 10X since both earn equal so 15 + 15X = 35 + 10 X so X = 4 Hrs Ans

Excluding the charges of service call for Nigel and Shaun i.e. $15 and $35 we can say that Nigel worked for 4 hrs (Amt. earned=15+15+15+15) and Shaun also works for 4 hrs similarly (Here, amt. earned=10+10+10+10 ). Both earn the same grand total of amt.$75 respectively as they work for equal number of hours with respect to their difference in service call charges.

Different between payment per hour : 15-10 =5

For first hour : A= 30 , B=45

45-30 = 15 = 3(5)

So they worked for 1+3 hours.

3 10+30 = 3 15+15
