How Many Lies Has Pinocchio Told Today?

Algebra Level 1

Every time Pinocchio tells a lie, his nose grows one inch longer.

When he left this morning, Pinocchio's nose was only 3 inches long. However, when he arrived home for dinner, his creator Geppetto noticed that his nose was now 9 inches long.

How many lies did Pinocchio tell while he was away?

3 9 5 6

how can this be calculus?

It is calculus! In a mathematical notation, the statement is:

dLongitude of nose/dLies =1

I was sure this was a trick question based on the wording. If his nose GETS 1 inch longer, than certainly 6 is the answer. But it says his nose GROWS 1 in longer with each lie... this can ALSO be calculated as meaning that the GROWTH increases rather than the nose itself. So, 3+0 is the state of the nose at breakfast, 3 + (0+1) happens at the first lie (=4), 4 + (1+1) happens at the next lie (=6), and then 6 + (1+1+1) happens at the 3rd and final lie (=9). Seems like at least an alternately correct answer.

Yeah, same question! The warm-up questions are so difficult compared to these!

If "GROWS" is the active word (rather than GETS), then 3 should be the answer. 3 + (0+1) is the first lie's growth. 4 + (1+1) is the second lie's growth. And 6 + (2+1) is the 3rd and final lie's growth. Alternate correct answer based on the wording, me thinks.

It's categorized as Algebra.

That's silly. It popped up as level 3 algebra, too.

When Pinocchio left for school his nose was only 3 inches long, but when he came back it was 9 inches long. To figure out how many lies he told, we compute 9 3 9 - 3 to get 6. So Pinocchio told 6 lies.

this cant be right it said how many lies did he tell today not after he left

Exactly, It needs to specify more.

What if he lied three times in breakfast? It is still today.

They said when he left home Pinocchio's nose was 3 inches and when he came back it's 9 .That means he told 6 lies

The initial length of his nose was 3 3 inches. The final length was 9 9 inches. Therefore his nose grew 9 3 = 6 9-3=6 inches. Since 1 1 lie is equivalent to 1 1 inch, that means that he lied 6 6 times.

Every time Pinocchio tells a lie, his nose grows one inch longer.

1 lie = 1 inch

When he left this morning, his nose was 3 inches long.

When he arrived home for dinner, his nose was 9 inches long.

Therefore, Pinocchio told 9 3 = 6 9 - 3 = 6 lies.

What if he lied three times in breakfast? It is still today.

1 lie=1 inch longer.

so,6 lies= 6 inch longer.

Pinocchio lies from day to night=Pinocchio nose length at day-Pinocchio nose length at night= 9 3 = 6 9-3=\boxed{\large{6}}

i think more than i should

This is basic arithmetic, and the question should be "How many lies did he tell whilst he was out?"

As we don't know if his three inch nose is the result of any lies he told earlier in the day.

9 3 = 6 9-3=6 so easy

Assuming that he didn't tell any truths, take 9 3 = 6 9 - 3 = 6 inches. One lie is equivalent to one inch extension. Therefore he told 6 lies.

Since we know his nose grows an inch for every lie, and he left home with a 3 inch long nose and returned with a 9 inch long nose, we subtract 3 from 9 and get 6, which is how many lies he told.

1 lie = 1 inch

His nose grew by 9 - 3 = 6 inches

Therefore: he lied 6 times.

9-3=6 => 1*6=6 => 6 lies
