How many reactions?

Chemistry Level 2

How many possible chemical reactions are there when we chlorinate a C a ( O H ) X 2 \ce{Ca(OH)2} solution?

Note: A reversible reaction is counted as 1 1 reaction only.

The answer is 4.

There are 4 \boxed{4} :

  • C l X 2 + H X 2 O H C l + H C l O \ce{Cl_2 + H_2O <=> HCl + HClO}

  • C a ( O H ) X 2 + 2 H C l C a C l X 2 + H X 2 O \ce{Ca(OH)_2 + 2HCl -> CaCl_2 + H_2O}

  • C a ( O H ) X 2 + 2 H C l O C a ( C l O ) X 2 + 2 H X 2 O \ce{Ca(OH)_2 + 2HClO -> Ca(ClO)_2 + 2H_2O}

  • C a ( O H ) X 2 + H C l + H C l O C a O C l X 2 + 2 H X 2 O \ce{Ca(OH)_2 + HCl + HClO -> CaOCl_2 + 2H_2O}

    Additionally, chlorine gas can react with calcium hydroxide powder: C l X 2 + C a ( O H ) X 2 C a O C l X 2 + H X 2 O \ce{Cl_2 + Ca(OH)_2 -> CaOCl_2 + H_2O} . But since the question is about the C a ( O H ) X 2 \ce{Ca(OH)_2} solution, we don't count this.
