Let G G be the number of girls and B B be the number of boys.

Henry has B 1 B-1 brothers and G G sisters. So,

G = 2 ( B 1 ) G = 2 \cdot (B-1)

Alice has G 1 G-1 sisters and B B brothers. So,

B = G 1 B = G-1

Solving,

B = 3 B=3 and G = 4 G = 4

3 + 4 = 7 3+4 = \boxed7
