How many sides? :O

Geometry Level 2

The perimeter of a regular polygon varies directly as the length of sides. There is a certain polygon with a perimeter of 720 cm. If the length of side is decreased by 40 cm, the perimeter is (1/3) less. How many sides is that polygon?

The answer is 6.

2 solutions

We can call the number of sides: x x and the length of the sides of the initial polygon with x x sides: y y . Then we can establish the system :

720 y = x \dfrac{720}{y}=x
x ( y 40 ) = 480 x(y-40)=480

Solving we get that x = 6 x=6 and y = 120 y=120

Base from the problem, the equation of variation is: P = kS .

By the given data,

720 = kS ----> S = 720/k

-----> (S-40)k = P - (1/3)P

-----> (720/k - 40)k = (2/3)P

-----> 720 - 40k = (2/3)720

------> 720 - 4k = 480

-------> k = 6

So, therefore, S = 720/6 = 120 cm.

So, the # of sides is most probably the value of k, which is 6.
