If we treat the largest square is of dimension 6 by 6, then we may count the number of squares carefully and systematically, starting with 1X1 squares: 20 2X2 squares: 9+4=13 3X3 squares: 4 4X4 squares: 4+4+1=9 5X5 squares: 4 6X6 square: 1
So the total is 51.
