How Many Days?

Logic Level 2

There is a plant sale. The plant multiplies each day. John wants one. If he buys one, it will take 10 days to cover his yard. He speeds it up. He buys 2 plants. How many days will it take for the plants to cover his yard?

The answer is 9.

When 2 plants are together at same growth rate, the number will be 1 less than before.

Care to explain why exactly?

I assumed that what is meant by "the plant multiplies each day" is that it doubles in size each day. So with 2 plants, after 9 days each of the plants covers half the yard, and thus together cover the whole yard.

Thought something like that yes, but I didn't want to assume it ;)
