For the first move, White can move

  • any pawn one step forward. This can be done in 8 ways, since there are 8 pawns.

  • any pawn two steps forward. This can be done in 8 ways.

  • any of the knights. This can be done in 4 ways. There are two knights, and each knight can move to two possible squares.

Thus, there are a total of 8 + 8 + 4 = 20 8 + 8 + 4 = \boxed{20} possible moves for white. _\square
