How Well Do You Know Matrices?

Algebra Level 1

If α = [ 1 6 4 8 ] \alpha =\begin{bmatrix} 1 & -6 \\ 4 & 8 \end{bmatrix} and β = [ 2 4 8 3 ] , \beta =\begin{bmatrix} 2 & 4 \\ 8 & 3 \end{bmatrix}, what is the value of 3 α 2 β ? { 3\alpha }-{ 2\beta }?

Express your answer as the sum of all elements in the final matrix.

The answer is -13.

3 α 2 β = 3 [ 1 6 4 8 ] 2 [ 2 4 8 3 ] 3\alpha -2\beta =3\begin{bmatrix} 1 & -6 \\ 4 & 8 \end{bmatrix}-2\begin{bmatrix} 2 & 4 \\ 8 & 3 \end{bmatrix}

[ 3 18 12 24 ] [ 4 8 16 6 ] = [ 1 26 4 18 ] \begin{bmatrix} 3 & -18 \\ 12 & 24 \end{bmatrix}-\begin{bmatrix} 4 & 8 \\ 16 & 6 \end{bmatrix}=\begin{bmatrix} -1 & -26 \\ -4 & 18 \end{bmatrix}

( 1 ) + ( 26 ) + ( 4 ) + 18 = 13 (-1)+(-26)+(-4)+18=-13

i totally looked at my signs wrong

3 α 2 β = 3 [ 1 6 4 8 ] 2 [ 2 4 8 3 ] = [ 3 18 12 24 ] [ 4 8 16 6 ] = [ 3 4 18 8 12 16 24 6 ] = [ 1 26 4 18 ] \begin{aligned} 3 \alpha - 2 \beta & = 3 \begin{bmatrix} 1 & -6 \\ 4 & 8 \end{bmatrix} - 2 \begin{bmatrix} 2 & 4 \\ 8 & 3 \end{bmatrix} \\ & = \begin{bmatrix} 3 & -18 \\ 12 & 24 \end{bmatrix} - \begin{bmatrix} 4 & 8 \\ 16 & 6 \end{bmatrix} \\ & = \begin{bmatrix} 3-4 & -18-8 \\ 12-16 & 24 -6 \end{bmatrix} \\ & = \begin{bmatrix} -1 & -26 \\ -4 & 18 \end{bmatrix} \end{aligned}

Therefore, the answer required 1 26 4 + 18 = 13 -1 -26 -4 +18 = \boxed{-13} .

Let's multiple 3 for the sum of the elements of the first matrix 3x7 and then subtract the double of the sum of the elements of the second matrix 2×17 21-34=-13
