Take 3 times 5 forward and 3 backward steps. So it will take 24 seconds and reach at 6 meters. Then 5 steps , So he will reach at 11 meters and total time will be 29 seconds.

Just before he falls into the pit will he be walking 5 metres ahead so before that, he would have covered a displacement of 11 5 = 6 11-5=6 metres. Now each round moves him forward by 5 3 = 2 5-3 = 2 metres, so to cover a displacement of 6 metres, he needs to cover 6 ÷ 2 = 3 6\div 2 = 3 rounds. Each round takes 5 + 3 = 8 5+3 = 8 seconds so 3 rounds would take 8 × 3 = 24 8 \times 3=24 seconds. This together with the 5 seconds needed for the last 5 steps forward gives us 24 + 5 = 29 24+5 = \boxed{29} seconds.
