A person looks into the bag of a bird hunter. And tells the hunter:

There are all sparrows but six; there are all pigeons but six; and there are all ducks but six.

Let d be the number of ducks, p be the number of pigeons, and s be the number of sparrows.

Assuming all the birds in the bag are one of these three types, we get the follow three relationships:

1) d + p = 6 d + p = 6

2) d + s = 6 d + s = 6

3) p + s = 6 p + s = 6

If we add all three equations together, we get 2 d + 2 p + 2 s = 18 2d + 2p + 2s = 18 , i.e., d + p + s = 9 d + p + s = 9 .

Alternatively, there are six quail in the bag and no ducks, pigeons, or sparrows at all.

Or four quail and one duck, one pigeon and one sparrow, for a total of 7 7 birds.
