Let x x and y y be numbers such that x ( y + 4 ) = 16 x(y + 4) = 16 and y ( x + 4 ) = 32 y(x +4) = 32 . What is 2 ( y x ) 2(y - x) ?

x ( y + 4 ) = 16 x(y + 4) = 16

y ( x + 4 ) = 32 y(x + 4) = 32

( 1 ) x y + 4 x = 16 (1) \text { } xy + 4x = 16

( 2 ) x y + 4 y = 32 (2) \text { } xy + 4y = 32

( 2 ) ( 1 ) : (2) - (1):

4 y 4 x = 16 4y - 4x = 16

After dividing both sides by 2:

2 y 2 x = 8 2y - 2x = 8

2 ( y x ) = 8 2(y - x) = \boxed {8}
