If a YES was a NO

Algebra Level 2

I can't remember how many people voted, but I do know that the ratio of YES:NO votes was 9:8. If one of those who voted YES had voted NO, the ratio would have been 19:17.

How many people voted?

The answer is 612.

Let y be the number of YES votes, v be the number of voters. Convert ratios into fraction of voters who voted YES.

y = 9v/17

While y - 1 = 19v/36

So 9v/17 = (19v + 36)/36

324v = 323v + 612

v = 612

Or just use 17*19=612

But 17 * 19=323 not 612

Do you mean 17*(19+17)?
