  • The total number of permutations of the four children genders is 2 4 = 16 2^4 = 16 .
  • The total number of combinations of getting two boys and two girls out of four children is ( 4 2 ) = 4 × 3 2 = 6 \dbinom 42 = \dfrac {4\times 3}2 = 6 .
  • Therefore the probability of having two boys and two girls out of four children is 6 16 = 3 8 \dfrac 6{16} = \boxed{\frac 38} .
