Well ... Let

x = 2. 357 1000 x = 2357. 357 \begin{aligned} x & = 2.\overline{357} \\ 1000x & = 2357.\overline{357} \end{aligned}

Subtract both the equations

999 x = 2355 x = 2355 999 999x = 2355 \hspace{5mm} \boxed{x = \dfrac{2355}{999}}

That's it .

IIT JEE 1983 Mathematics Paper Slide 7.

In addition, one of the book with me also mentions it. Perhaps, IIT has got tougher in the generation gap; or may be, even back then, there used to be 2 tests - one for screening, the other as the entrance test. Even for the 1982 paper, the objective are pretty easy, subjective are comparable to today's moderate questions.

PS: Either post the solution or delete the "solution".
