In 1508, Painters Had Trouble Finding Work. Yet Michelangelo Produced This Magnificent Piece Of Art

Geometry Level 2

In 1508, Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Julius II to repaint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The project was so large in scale that Michelangelo was suspicious that his enemies were setting him up for failure, and he considered turning it down.

But Pope Julius II insisted that none other than Michelangelo should paint paint the chapel's ceiling. A craftsman of impressive speed, Michelangelo set himself to finishing the project in 4 years. The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel measures 40 meters long by 13 meters wide. If Michelangelo paints 11 square meters of the ceiling each month, can he finish in time?

1) Yes.
2) No.
3) Maybe.
4) There is not enough information given in the problem.

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel has a surface area of 40 m × 13 m = 520 m 2 . 40\text{ m}\times13\text{ m}=520\text{ m}^2. There are 48 48 months in 4 4 years, so the maximum surface area Michaelangelo can paint is 48 × 11 m 2 = 528 m 2 . 48\times11\text{ m}^2=528\text{ m}^2. Luckily for Michaelangelo, this is more than the amount that he needs to paint, so he CAN \textbf{CAN} complete painting the Sistine Chapel according to his deadline.

very nice solution !! excellent !

area = 40*13 =520 area paint in a month = 11 m^2 time required to paint = 520/11 = 47.77 months total time is 48 months so 48>47.77 so he done

Well I got this wrong......

My answer is (4).

Explanation : The problem said the ceiling was 40m * 13m. This implies only that the boundaries were 40m and 30m. But the ceiling surface can be planar or a highly bent or a curved one(which it is, if one looks at the 3-D picture taken). This decides the total surface area of the ceiling . The area would have been more than 520 square meters if the ceiling was a curved one, still satisfying the condition that the length and breadth(curved or otherwise)are 40m and 13m . But the problem does not give that info.

So, according to me the right answer is (4).

You are absolutely correct in your thinking (in fact, even I had the same thought). But I made my decision to go toward the 2D simply by looking at the rating (1, 300 something) - which means an easy question. Sometimes, you can judge if the question is actually challenging you or not based on its level. And since this level is so low, there is negligible chance that the guy wants you to think deep on this.

I think, we can see from the pic, ceiling is rectangular and are is 520 sq.m

Sathi Nagi Reddy - 7 years, 4 months ago

i checked an image it is semi curcular ! its mj who painted the pic to look like that i think ! so width is actually refererd to the circumference length

Because there are 48 months in 4 Years and with Micheal Angelo's rate of work , and the area of the ceiling was 40 x 13 = 520 sq. meters. All we have to do is divide the Total Area of the ceiling by the rate he paints which is 11 sq. meters a month. This would have an approximate answer of 47.27 months which concludes that he can finish the painting with less than a month to spare. :)

the same as wat trevor .b wrote

very nice solution !! excellent !

simply find the area of the ceiling which gives you 520 square meters. now he set himself in finishing it for 4 years or 48 months. if rate of work is 11 per month then 520/11 must be less than 48 to finish the job. now 520/11= 47 &3/11

first we should find the area of the ceiling then divide it by the area he finishes in one month then divide it with 12 to get the no. of years.

well... here, he got time = 4years = 4 * 12months= 48months and "The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel measures 40 meters long by 13 meters wide" = (40 * 13)sq = 520sq but if Michelangelo paints 11 square meters of the ceiling each month, he can do, (11 * 48)sq=528sq in 4years.....

so.... as 528>520.... he can blow that thing off.... :)

so, the asnwer is YES!

Given, the length and breadth of the ceiling, time set is 4 yrs., which is 48 months and he can do 11 m sq. per month. The area of the ceiling is lb=40x13=520 m sq. The area he can do in 4 years = 11x48 = 528, which is of course, greater than the required. And hence, He can finish it within 4 years(most accurately, 3 years 11 months and 8.3333....... days ---- LOL!)

total area = 40 * 30 = 520 . In a year painted by him 11 * 12=132 . And 132 * 4 = 528 > 520 . So , Yes

Find area of ceiling. Divide by 11. We'll get the number of months. Rounded-up quotient will help (which is 48). Divide by 12 to get the number of years.

The total area of the ceiling is 40 × 13 40 \times 13 = 520. In 1 month, he painted 11 square meters. In 1 year, he painted 11 × 12 11 \times 12 = 132. In 4 years, he is expected to paint 132 × 4 132 \times 4 =528 square meters. This is bigger than the surface area of the ceiling which means that he finished it on time.

The dimensions of the Sistine Chapel is 40 × 13 40 \times 13 meters. Therefore, its area is 40 × 13 = 520 40 \times 13 = 520 square meters.

Since Michelangelo can paint 11 square meters per month, then 11 m 2 m o n t h × 12 m o n t h s 1 y e a r = 132 m 2 y e a r 11 \frac{m^2}{month} \times \frac{12 months}{1 year} = 132 \frac{m^2}{year} .

Dividing the first number we got by the second number,

520 m 2 132 m 2 y e a r = 3. 93 y e a r s \frac{520 m^2}{132 \frac{m^2}{year}}=3.\overline{93} years

Since 3. 93 < 4 3.\overline{93} < 4 , Michelangelo can finish his work within his goal.

I mean "dimensions of the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel." My bad.

area of the ceiling of the sistine chapel measures 40m long and 13m wide.. so therefore a=lw, a=40x13, a=520m^2 since micheal paints 11sq.m per month.. we can say that 520/11 is equal to the number of months that micheal can finish the painting.. and 520/11=47.27months.. since it ask if he can finish it in 4years.. then we divide 47.27 by 4.. where the answer must be 12<.. 47.27/4=11.8175.. so since it is below 12... we can conclude that he can finish it in 3 years 24.5days :D not really the accurate solution but thats how i solve it :D

Considering the ceiling to be a uniform rectangle, its area will be (40×30)=520sq.meters Since he has 4 years time, and he is painting 11sq.meters per day, In 1 day he paints 11 sq.meters, therefore he can paint 'x' sq.meters in 1460 days (number of days in 4 years). 1 day - 11sq.meters 1460 days - x sq.meters. There fore by cross multiplication, we get x=1460 × 11 = 16060 sq.meters days which is way more than the surface area of the ceiling.

total area=40*13=520 sq.ft area painted in one month=11sq.ft time need to paint total area=520/11=47.27 months given time= 4 years=48 months So he will complete in time

Raghav Dua

40 x 13 = 520 meter squared is the area he needs to paint.

4 years means = 12 x 4 = 48 months time, which he has.

Thus, 11 x 48 = 528. That means, by the end of the last month of his time, he would've actually covered 528 meter squared. So the task is possible :-)

Area of ceiling=40*13=520 sq.metres

time he has=4years= 4*12 = 48 months

in 1 month he paints = 11 sq.metres

in 48 months he can paint = 528 sq.metres

in 4 years he can paint 528 sq.metres which is more than the area of ceiling which is 520 sq.metres.

Hence he can finish the painting in 4 years

4 years = 48 months. Michelangelo can paint 11x48=528 square metres in that time. The ceiling is only 40m x 13m = 520 square metres.

40(13)=520 meters^2. 520/11 m^2 per month~47. 4*12 months= 48 months>47. So yes

The total area that Michaelangelo has to paint is 40m * 13m = 520 m^2. If Michaelangelo can paint an area of 11m^2 each month, then in 1 year he would have painted a total of 11m^2/month * 12 months/1year = 132 m^2/year. In 4 years, he would have painted 132^2/year * 4 years = 528m^2 and with little time to spare.

Total 520m² 11 12 4=528

11x12x4=528
