Inconvenient Length Measures

Geometry Level 2

Susan cuts out a rectangle from the corner of a right triangle.

While she doesn't know the dimensions of the rectangle, she does know the lengths of the remaining sides on the triangle, which are 2 and 4,

What is the area of the rectangle?

Given A F = 2 AF=2 and C E = 4. CE=4. Let B F = D E = x BF=DE=x and F D = B E = y . FD=BE=y.
We observe that F D B C , FD || BC, A F D = D E C = 9 0 \angle AFD=\angle DEC=90^\circ and A D F = A C B . \angle ADF=\angle ACB. So A F D D E C . \triangle AFD\sim\triangle DEC.
By using similarity properties, A F D E = F D E C 2 y = x 4 x y = 8. \dfrac{AF}{DE}=\dfrac{FD}{EC}\Rightarrow \dfrac{2}{y}=\dfrac{x}{4}\Rightarrow xy=8.
Since the area of rectangle = w i d t h × b r e a d t h = x y = 8 . =width\times breadth=xy=\boxed{8}.

Tg(acb)=x/4=2/y

Xy=8
