. Each side is measured in cm. Three cuts are made parallel to the faces of the cube as shown creating eight separate solids which are then separated. What is the increase in the total surface area?

Every small cube has three new faces and three old faces, so the overall area has doubled.
The original area was 1 0 × 1 0 × 6 = 6 0 0 c m 2
so the increase is aslo 6 0 0 c m 2 .
Or you could calculate the area of one of the small cubes as 5 × 5 × 6 = 1 5 0 c m 2
get the area of all of them as 8 × 1 5 0 = 1 2 0 0 c m 2
and subtract the original 6 0 0 c m 2 , to get the answer 6 0 0 c m 2
