Total number of bananas given away:

5 × 2 = 10

If the initial number of bananas is b, then

1 4 b = 10 \frac {1}{4} b = 10

b = 40 b = \boxed {40}

5 × 2 = 1 4 x x = 40 5 \times 2 = \dfrac{1}{4}x \blue{\implies} x = \boxed{40}

5 friends x 2 bananas given to each friend = 10 bananas given to 5 friends if 10 is 1/4 of all bananas he had then 10 total bananas he gave x 4 if the fraction of bananas is 1/4 = 40 bananas That he had intially
