A hiker stands at the bottom of a steep hill. The hiker can either follow a straight path to the top of the hill, a distance of 300 m, or he can follow a zigzag path to the top and walk a distance of 600 m. The work done by the force of gravity along the zigzag path is how many times the work done along the straight path ?

The answer is 1.

Work is independent of path followed. Work depends on Displacement and not on distance. And as distance is changing but displacement is same in both cases, thus the work is same.

Yep....that is pretty much all there is to it:)
