11 solutions

In order to divisible by 6 6 , I must find a number that's divisible by 2 2 . Thus, the number must be even.

This gives the list: 992 , 994 , 996 , 998 992, 994, 996, 998

And also, I must find a number that is divisible by 3 3 :

9 + 9 + 2 = 20 9+9+2=20

9 + 9 + 4 = 23 9+9+4=23

9 + 9 + 6 = 24 9+9+6=24

9 + 9 + 8 = 26 9+9+8=26

You know 24 24 is divisible by 3 3 . Thus: 996 \boxed{996} is the correct answer. Then look at the picture above.

Yes. This is the quickest approach that I'm looking for. Kudos!

Unfortunately you can't apply the same technique for divisibility rules of 7 and 13.

Bonus question : Find all the values of single digit A A such that the six digit number 99 A A A A A \overline{99AAAAA} is divisible by 11.

Since it's a multiple of 6, it must be divisible by both 2 and 3.

Multiples of 2 : 992, 994, 996, 998, 1000

Multiples of 3 : 993, 996, 999

So, the only possible answer is :

996 \boxed{996}

This works too! Nice work!

a number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by 2 and 3

-divisible by 2 if it starts with 2, 4, 6, 8, and 0

-divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3

assume the number is 99x where x = [2:9] 9+9+x should be divisible by 3, so x can be 0, 3, 6, and 9 and to be divisble by 2 we only have x = 6

996

For a number to be divisible by 6, it must be a multiple of both 2 and 3.

If the number is 99X, ( 9+9+X = 18+X) is divisible by 3 or X is divisible by 3(as 9+9 is already a multiple of three). So, X is a single digit, even multiple of three. So X is 6. And number is 996.

991/6=165.66666667 => 165.66666667 -165 =0.666666667 => 0.666666667*6=1 => 991-1+6=996

For a number which is divisible by 6 and less than 1000

1000/6=166.6

So when multiple 166 to 6 we get number less than 1000

So answer is 166×6=996

I took a bit of a longer approach. I also was thinking I needed to know the number that when multiplied by 6 gave you a number in that range (as opposed to the number in that range).

So I knew 6 * 100 = 600. 6* 50 = 300. 6 * 16 = 96.

So I found it was 166 times 6 to give you a number in that range (996)

991+x --> 0 (mod 6)
991 --> 1 (mod 6)
x --> 5 (mod 6)

x =5
991+5 = 996
