Is it true?

Level 1

I can prove why 1 = 2

  • Lets say y = x
  • Multiply through by x xy = x2
  • Subtract y2 from each side xy - y2 = x2 - y2
  • Factor each side y(x-y) = (x+y)(x-y)
  • Divide both sides by (x-y) y = x+y
  • Divide both sides by y y/y = x/y + y/y
  • And so... 1 = x/y + 1
  • Since x=y, x/y = 1 1 = 1 + 1
  • And so... 1 = 2

How is this possible ?

It is possible..if 1 is Correct. Step 3 is impossible Step 5 is impossible All steps are correct it is true...

Step 5 iz impossible......

Since, x=y

Therefore x-y= 0

In step 5, y(x-y) is divided by (x-y) ..... any no. Divided by 0 is not defined. ........and in this case x-y=0.....

The asker has shown x-y divided by x-y to be 1

He has not clarified where one step starts and other ends. Plus there is no distinction between power of x and co-efficient of x.

As x=y,in the fifth step both sides are divided by zero which is undefined.
