Possible Isosceles Triangles

Geometry Level 3

Triangle A B C ABC is isosceles, and A B C = x . \angle ABC = x^{\circ}. For some fixed value of x x , the sum of the possible measures of B A C \angle BAC is 24 0 . 240^{\circ}.

What is x x ?

The answer is 20.

There are three cases.

Case 1 : A B C = A C B \angle ABC=\angle ACB

Case 2 : B A C = A C B \angle BAC=\angle ACB

Case 3 : A B C = B A C \angle ABC=\angle BAC

In these cases, we get the sum of the possible values for B A C \angle BAC is-

180 x 2 + 180 2 x + x = 240 \frac{180-x}{2}+180-2x+x=240

Solving this equation gives x = 20 x=20

I nearly got the answer... just messed up (180-x)/2
