It's a strange clock

The above figure shows a decimal clock, which is from the period of French revolution, when the French tried to popularize decimal time . They divided one day into ten decimal hours. Each decimal hour is divided into 100 decimal minutes, and each decimal minute is further divided into 100 decimal seconds.

The above clock reads as 08:26 in decimal time. What time is it when converted to 24-hour clock ?

Let's calculate what fraction of the day has passed when it is 08:26 in decimal time. A day has 10 × 100 = 1000 10 \times 100 = 1000 decimal minutes. 8 × 10 + 26 = 826 8 \times 10 + 26 = 826 decimal minutes have passed. This means that 826 1000 \frac{826}{1000} of the day has passed.

This means that the current time is 826 1000 × 24 \frac{826}{1000} \times 24 hours past midnight.
= 19824 1000 = \frac{19824}{1000} hours past midnight
= 19 + 824 1000 = 19 + \frac{824}{1000} hours past midnight
= 19 = 19 hours, 824 1000 × 60 \frac{824}{1000} \times 60 minutes past midnight
19 \approx 19 hours, 49 49 minutes.

Thus, the time is about 7:50 pm. _\square
