Its Graphitic!

Chemistry Level 3

Read the following sequence of reactions and then answer the question :

  • Graphite reacts with hot and concentrated H N O 3 HNO_{3} to form an acid A A with C 2 O 2 H \boxed{C_{2}O_{2}H} as its empirical formula.

  • When A A is heated we get B B , which is an oxide of carbon, with C 4 O 3 \boxed{C_{4}O_{3}} as its empirical formula.

  • When A A undergoes dry distillation we get another acid C C with empirical formula : C 5 H 3 O 4 \boxed{C_{5}H_{3}O_{4}} and a gaseous compound of carbon D D .

If a a , b b , c c and d d are the relative molecular masses of the compounds A A , B B , C C and D D respectively, then find the value of a a + b b + c c + d d as M \boxed{M}

The answer is 928.

A - Mellitic Acid

B - Mellitic Anhydride

C - Pyromellitic Acid

D - Carbon Dioxide

A is C12O12H6, with molecular weight 342, B is C12O9, with molecular weight 288, C is C10O8H6, with molecular weight 254 and D is CO2, with molecular weight 44. The sum is 342+288+254+44=928
