It's only 3 numbers... How hard can it be?

The mean of three numbers is 14 more than the least of the numbers and 23 less than the greatest. The median of the three numbers is 13. What is their sum?


The answer is 66.

This is a pretty simple system of equations. Let's let x x be the smaller value, and y y be the larger. We have two equations:

x + 14 = x + y + 13 3 x+14=\frac{x+y+13}{3}

y 23 = x + y + 13 3 y-23=\frac{x+y+13}{3}

Solving, we find that the values are 8,13, and 45.

It's a matter of preference. For me, I used substitution.
