JEE Coordinate (3)!

Geometry Level 5

Variable pairs of chords at right angles and drawn through a point P P (with eccentric angle π 4 \frac\pi4 ) on the ellipse x 2 4 + y 2 = 1 \dfrac{x^2}4+y^2 = 1 to meet the ellipse at two points, say A A and B B .

If the line joining A A and B B passes through a fixed point Q = ( a , b ) Q=(a,b) and the value of a 2 + b 2 a^2+b^2 can be expressed as m n \dfrac mn , where m m and n n are coprime positive integers, submit your answer as n m n-m .

1 solution

Let equation of AB be lx+my=1.Shift the origin to point P. Obtain the joint equation of pair of lines AP and BP in new frame by homogenizing equation of AB (in new frame) with equation of ellipse (in new frame). Now, equate (coefficient of x² +coefficient of y²)=0, to obtain the fixed point.

Give proper solution please

Give the solution in a precise way

Can this be done by an eccentric angle bash?

Suhas Sheikh - 2 years, 10 months ago

why not coefficient of x^2 and y^2 individually 0??
