For ∣ z − z 1 ∣ + ∣ z − z 2 ∣ = k |z-z_1| + |z-z_2| = k represents ellipse if k > ∣ z 1 − z 2 ∣ k>|z_1 - z_2| .

The Locus of a point whose sum of distances from two points remains constant provided that the given distance is greater than the distance between the two points is an ellipse. if distances are equal then the locus will be a line segment and if distance is lesser then no locus is possible.
