take Johns age as x and his sons age as y x=3y 5 years ago,(x-5)+(y-5)=50; 4y-10=50; 4y=60; y=15; x=3y=45 ;

the variable x disappeared?

Now John is 5x, x is his son's age. Five years ago, John's age is 3x-5 his son five years ago is x-5. 3x-5+x-5=50. X is 15 so 3(15) is 45.
