Depends on your view on life. Technically he still has 3 as the butterfly is just a stage of the caterpillars life cycle. However the simple answer is 1 3 thirds is 1 2 thirds changed 3-2=1

If there is only 3, 1/3 would be 1. 2/3 is two, so 3-2=1.
