Suppose the number is x x . The expression becomes:

2 x + 21 × 2018 2 x 1009 \dfrac{2x + 21 \times 2018 - 2x}{1009}

= 21 × 2 × 1009 1009 = \dfrac{21 \times 2 \times 1009}{1009}

= 21 × 2 = 21 \times 2

= 42 = \boxed{42}

At the step 21 × 2018 1009 \dfrac{21 \times 2018}{1009} you could just simplify 2018 2018 as 2 × 1009 2 \times 1009 , avoiding multiplying out 21 by 2018.

21 × 2 × 1009 1009 21 × 2 = 42 \dfrac{21 \times 2 \times \cancel{1009}}{\cancel{1009}} \\ 21 \times 2 = \boxed{42}
