Just for timepass

A gas mixture consists of 2 moles of oxygen and 4 moles of argon at temperature T. Neglecting all vibrational modes, the total energy of the system is nRT , where T is given temperature and R is universal gas constant.

What is the value of n .

The answer is 11.

Oxygen is a diatomic gas, and argon is a monatomic gas. Thus their respective degrees of freedom are 5 5 and 3. 3. So the total energy of the system is E = n 1 X 1 + n 2 X 2 2 R T = 2 × 5 + 4 × 3 2 R T = 11 R T E = \frac{n_1 X_1 + n_2 X_2}{2}RT \\ = \frac{2\times 5 + 4\times 3}{2} RT \\ = 11RT Thus n = 11 \boxed{n = 11}

It is said that we have to neglect all vibrational mode..... Now what does that mean?
