The Kentucky Derby is the most important horse race in America, and is also known for the amazing hats people wear for the race. The race itself is 2 km long and the winning horse this year was Orb in a time of 2 minutes , 2 . 8 9 seconds . What was Orb's average speed in m/s ?

2 minutes , 2 . 8 9 seconds = ( 2 × 6 0 ) seconds + 2 . 8 9 seconds
= 1 2 0 seconds + 2 . 8 9 seconds = 1 2 2 . 8 9 seconds
2 km = ( 2 × 1 0 0 0 ) meters = 2 0 0 0 meters
Hence, the average is ( 2 0 0 0 ÷ 1 2 2 . 8 9 ) m/s ≈ 1 6 . 2 7 m/s
This problem is very simple.
From physics,we have
distance=time X speed
Over here distance=2km=2000m and time = 2 min. 2.89 sec=122.89sec.
And so
time=distance/speed
= 2000/122.89 m/s = 16.275 m/s = 16.3 m/s
average velocity is the ratio of total distance covered and total time taken
then 2 km=2000 m 2 mins and 2.89 seconds=122.89 seconds
2000/122.89=16.27471723 m/s
ah, I just didn't convert km to m

"k or kilo" is just a prefix which equal to 1000. So, 2 km = 2*1000 m
2km = 2000m , 2minutes and 2.89 sec = 122.89s cause v=s/t so we got 2000/122.89 m/s and the answer is 16.27 m/s
distance =2000m time= 120+2.89s= 122.89s speed= 2000/122.89=16.27
To find Orb's average speed in m/s, we have to compute the number of meters he travelled and divide that quantity by the number of seconds it took him to travel that distance.
The question states that the race is 2 km long, so Orb travelled 2 × 1 0 0 0 = 2 0 0 0 meters.
The question also states that Orb finished in 2 minutes and 2.89 seconds, which is equivalent to 122.89 seconds.
The desired answer is 1 2 2 . 8 9 2 0 0 0 , which is about 1 6 . 2 7 .
2km= 2000 & (2minutes and 2.89seconds = 122.89s 2000/ 122.89 = 16.27 :)
S=m/s 2 km=2000 m 2 minutes and 2.89 seconds=122.89 seconds S=2000m/122.89s S=16.27m/s
v = t s
v = ( 2 × 6 0 ) + 2 . 8 9 2 0 0 0
v = 1 2 2 . 8 9 2 0 0 0
v = 1 6 . 2 7 4
2min,2.89sec=122.89sec avg.speed(v)=s/t=2K/122.89=16.27m/sec
s =d/t s 2000m/122.89s s= 16.27471723m/s
the horse takes 2min 2.89sec so convert min into sec because we want ans in m/s then we will get ans122.89 sec the convert km into m then we get 2000m then use the speed formula s=d/t
easy! s=d/t make sure time is in seconds :) then make it reasonable!
We have S=d/t, where d is distance, t is time and s is speed. Since we want speed to be in m/s then we have to convert 2km=2000m and 2 minutes and 2.89 seconds= 122.89s. Then; S=d/t=2000/122.89=16.27
S=v t 2km = 2000 m 2 minute 2.89 second = 122.89 second 2000 = v 122.89 second v = 2000/122.89 = 16.27 m/s
2 km = 2000 m and 2 minutes + 2,89 seconds = 122,89 second. So, v = 2000 m/ 122,89 s = 16.274717.. m/s . Answer : 16.27E-0
2km=2000m 2min,2.89sec=122.89sec 2000/122.89=16.270
its a simple use of the formula speed=distance/time now convert the time to 120+2.89s and distance to 2000m which gives speed=2000/122.89=16.270m/s
v = d / t
v = 2000/122.89 = 16.275 m/s
(2 60+2.89)/(2 1000)=122.89/2000=16.270
WE KNOW THAT AVERAGE SPEED = TOTAL DISTANCE / TOTAL TIME
SO 2000M / 122.89SEC = 16.27 m/s.

for this problem we can use the formula v = t s
from the details, we know that the distance (s) is 2 km ( 2.000 m)
and the time is 2 minutes 2.89 seconds (122.89 seconds)
so by substituting the values to the formula, we will obtain
v = 1 2 2 . 8 9 2 0 0 0
v = 16.274 , and by using decimal approach, we will obtain 1 6 . 2 7 0
