Landlords are quite intelligent, aren't they?

Algebra Level 2

While house hunting in Mumbai, I came across a very good leasehold property. Discussing the lease the landlord told me:

"The property was originally on a 99 years lease and two-thirds of the time passed is equal to four- fifths of the time to come. Now, find how many years are there to go?

The answer is 45.

Let x = time passed

Then 2/3 x = 4/5(99-x)

x=54 therefore there are 45 years to go.

It's better to take time remaining as x. Because 1) you straightaway get the answer, and 2) the 99 in 99-x is easily multiplied by 2/3.

2/3 * (99-x) = 4/5 x

66 = (4/5 + 2/3) x

x = 45
