Learning Boyle's Law through solving this simple question :)

Level 1

A balloon with a volume of 2.0 L is filled with a gas at 3 atmospheres. If the pressure is reduced to 0.5 atmospheres without a change in temperature, what would be the volume of the balloon?

Boyle's Law =Boyle–Mariotte law

Definition : states that the absolute pressure and volume of a given mass of a confined gas are inversely proportional, if the temperature remains unchanged within a closed system.

The law itself can be stated as follows: for a fixed amount of an ideal gas kept at a fixed temperature, P (pressure) and V (volume) are inversely proportional (when one doubles, the other halves).

Boyle's Law states that for a fixed amount of an ideal gas kept at a fixed temperature, pressure and volume are inversely proportional.

Since the temperature does not change, Boyle's law can be used. Boyle's gas law can be expressed as: Pi Vi = Pf Vf

where Pi = initial pressure Vi = initial volume Pf = final pressure Vf = final volume

To find the final volume, solve the equation for Vf: Vf = Pi Vi / Pf

Vi = 2.0 L Pi = 3 atm Pf = 0.5 atm

Vf = (2.0 L)(3 atm) / (0.5 atm) Vf = 6 L/0.5 Vf = 12 L

Boyle'e law states that p1v1=p2v2; where p is for pressure and v is for volume.

From this we get that v2=(p1v1)/p2

p1=2

v1=3

p2=0.5

v2=unknown

We substitute the values with the formula

v2=(2*3)/0.5

v2=12

So the volume is 12L

for fixed mass of gases@ constant temperature product of their pressure and volume would be equal p1v1=p2v2 3 2=0.5 v2 v2=3*2/0.5 v2=12L
