Supposingly there are five subjects a, b, c, d, e.
Then a student can fail in each subject so 5 possibilities.
Then if he fails in 2 subjects so there are 10 possibilities.
If he fails in 3 subjects so there are 10 possibilities.
If he fails in 4 subjects so there are 5 possibilities.
If he fails in 5 subject so there is 1 possibility.
Total possibilities : 5+10+10+5+1=31.
