Let's study Chemistry 10

Chemistry Level 3

An organic compound A is taken and fused with sodium metal and this extract is then added iron (II) sulphate and then acidified with concentrated sulphuric acid and it give 'blood red' colour.

Which of the following can be A?

The test described in the problem is Lassaigne's test or fused sodium test. The blood red coloration indicates the presence of both sulfur S \ce{S} and nitrogen N \ce{N} in the organic compound A \ce{A} . Out of the four options:

  • Allicin R S ( O ) S R \ce{R-S(O)-S-R}
  • Sulfur mustard C X 4 H X 8 C l X 2 S \ce{C4H8Cl2S}
  • R-cysteine C X 3 H X 7 N O X 2 S \ce{C3H7NO2S}
  • Diphenyl disulfide C X 12 H X 10 S X 2 \ce{ C12H10S2}

only R-cysteine \boxed{\text{R-cysteine}} C X 3 H X 7 N O X 2 S \ce{C3H7NO2S} has both S \ce{S} and N \ce{N} .

nicely presented solution sir!
