If phenol accepts a proton then O H \ce{OH} will Change into a good leaving group H X 2 O X + \ce{H2O^+} If oxygen breaks bond then a carbocation will form in the ring which would be highly unstable hence this path is unfavourable.

The correct statement is " Alcohols and phenols are Bronsted acids but alcohols can also act as Bronsted base due to their unshared electron pair of oxygen"
