With the first Knave stating a fact and the rest of them accusing the previous Knave of lying, then they effectively have divided themselves into two opposing sides by parity. No matter which side is telling the truth, with an even number of total Knaves, they have the same number in each side, and that number is 4 / 2 = 2.

If the Knave of Hearts is telling the truth, then the Knave of Diamonds is lying, and the Knave of Spades is telling the truth and the Knave of Clubs is lying. If the Knave of Hearts is lying, then the Knave of Diamonds is telling the truth, the Knave of Spades is lying and the Knave of Clubs is telling the truth. Either way, exactly 2 of the knaves are telling the truth.
