The number 42 is, in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, "The Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything", calculated by an enormous supercomputer over a period of 7.5 million years.

I see someone else read the book besides me.

This book by Douglas Adams, which was published October 12th of 1979, was rated 4.5 out of 5 by Barnes & Noble. 

      However, the book trilogies were by Douglas Adams and Eoin Colfer, who did the Artemis Fowl series that started in 2001 and the W.A.R.P series that started from April of 2013.

Third, the 2005 film had Garth Jennings as director; I would encourage people to watch the film as well as reading the book and book trilogies.
